The decision to commemorate EDSA in Cebu stems from President Benigno Aquino wanting to show the nation, and perhaps the world, the kind of solidarity that Cebuanos had for surviving the twin natural disasters that hit Central Visayas last year.

The kind of solidarity, according to Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, is the core of the EDSA revolution.

A government official said commemorating EDSA in its original location is no longer as important as celebrating the spirit of EDSA.

As we all know, the EDSA Revolution is commemorated annually after President Ferdinand Marcos was ousted from public office.

The highlight of this year’s celebration is the “Salubungan”.

Dingdong Dantes will play the role of former President Fidel V. Ramos who was a military general during the Marcos dictatorship. He, along with incumbent Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, then head of national defense turned their backs on Marcos.

Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, on the other hand, will lead the multitude of people who showed up in EDSA after Cardinal Sin called on the faithful to protect those who left the Marcos fold.

The “Salubungan” will be re-enacted right in front of the flag pole at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

The nun who played a role during the revolution was also initially part of the plan but her religious order does not want her to take part of the re-enactment.

President Benigno Aquino will also grace the event.

He is also scheduled to pay a visit to the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Bantayan, northern Cebu.

This is his first visit since the natural disaster struck in November.
