Five college students from Cebu were treated by Google to an ALL-EXPENSE-PAID TRIP to the 2014 Google Online Marketing Lab Southeast Asia last November 5 to 7 at the Asian Institute of Management. Students from Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia were also represented in this exclusive training.
“Learning online marketing from the best was unforgettable. And meeting different people from Southeast Asia with shared interests was a bonus”, says Hannah Balite, one of the participants and a recent graduate from UP Cebu.
Aside from Hannah, the other participants from Cebu were Psalm Pueblos and Diandra Fernandez (also from UP Cebu), James Repdos from ACT and Jan Gazo from the University of San Carlos.
Four of these participants qualified for the exclusive Google event by competing in the Google Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC), an annual student competition participated by college students worldwide.
The Philippines has become a GOMC powerhouse in the past few years, producing a global champion and several regional champions. Winners are given a MacBook Pro and a trip to Googleplex in California, USA.
Aside from the chance of winning these prizes, students get to experience modern marketing hands-on, helping real businesses produce real business results.
“You simply can’t replace the experience of learning hands-on, and helping businesses along the way,” says Diandra.
In the GOMC, students compete by using Google AdWords, the online marketing platform of Google, to help local business get more customers and revenue.
According to Psalm, “Online marketing is a very important skill to learn, and GOMC is one of the rare opportunities where you can fully practice it in the real world.”
It requires months of training to prepare for the GOMC. In Cebu, the Cebu Customer Acquisition Academy (CCAA.ph) provides FREE training to students for the GOMC.
CCAA.ph is a collaboration between teachers; top online marketing companies of Cebu like Leadfunnel.ph, GetMore.ph, Clickinglabs, CrowdMetric and eReflect.com; and online advertising experts like Jun Baranggan and Lemuel Jovellar.
Kahlil Corazo, a coach in CCAA.ph, says that “Training students for the GOMC is great for everyone. Students get to learn online marketing hands-on, and the local pool of online marketers gets infused with top talent.”
