Local, int’l NGOs hold relief operations in typhoon Yolanda-affected areas in Cebu

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Chief Neil Sanchez reported that five non-government organizations (NGOs) have already expressed their intention to provide relief operations in the typhoon Yolanda-struck areas of northern Cebu.

The NGOs have already been briefed about the current relief efforts at the Provincial Disaster and Emergency Operations Center.

Let’s take a closer look at the organizations one by one.

1. United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)

UNICEF is a program that aims to provide long-term humanitarian assistance to mothers and children living in developing countires.

Their headquarters is located in New York City.

UNICEF belongs to the United Nations Development Group and is part of their Executive Committee.

UNICEF was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in December 11, 1946 in order to address the food and health problems experienced by children in countires that were affected by the second World War.

It has become a permanent program in 1953.

2. World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)

WSPA is an internation organization that champions animal rights and welfare. They also work with other organizations to ensure that the animals that they have personally helped will be taken cared of.

Their vision is “a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty has ended.”

In order to achieve their vision, the help people in understanding the importance of animal welfare, encourage countries to be animal-friendly, and builds various scientific cases to improve animal treatment.

3. Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that has a local chapter in our country. The organization lives by their vision of “a world where everyone has a decent place to live”. Their goal is to affiliate with 20 percent poorest barangays in the Philippines and implement their Shelter Program.

4. Operation Compassion

Operation Compassion is an American NGO that focuses on offering response to worldwide natural disasters, gives inspiration, training and information to aid churches in mobilizing help to the needy and concentrate their worldwide distribution to widows, single mothers and children.

5. Maltese International Relief Organization

Malteser International is an NGO that offers relief services during times of calamities and disasters, while providing support recovery and focus on initiating sustainable development. According to their mission statement, “Christian values and the humanitarian principles are the foundation of our work.”
